St. John's Youth at 24 Hours of Silence, March, 2013

On a March weekend from noon Saturday to noon Sunday, St. John's youth and their leaders hold a silent retreat to raise funds and awareness about mental illness. Often this is timed to coincide with Earth Day. Funds raised benefit Homestead Christian Care, offering supportive housing to people living with mental illness. Residents are assisted with personal goals and life skills training, social involvement and spiritual growth.

Some of our 24 Hours of Silence is spent in prayer supported by a labyrinth walk, guided meditation, sketching, water colours, journaling, as well as an evening prayer service of Compline provided by the clergy leadership. Some of the time is spent watching movies, playing games or cards and other community building - but all in complete silence! The youth of St. John's offer support through dedicating the whole church to the event, offering food hospitality and through financial sponsorship. The youth who take part have said that this event is an amazing experience.
