St. John's, Ancaster, Tribute: Murray Rathbone
Murray Rathbone studied piano with Kathleen Black Williams, a long-standing member of the Royal Canadian College of Organists, then organ with Stanley D. Webb, organist at St. Matthew's Anglican Church and Church of the Epiphany in Toronto. He studied theory with Henry Rosevear, Past National President of the RCCO. Murray has served as Organist and Director of Music at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, Toronto, St. Matthew's Anglican Church, Toronto, St. Andrew's Anglican Church, Scarborough, St. Peter's Anglican Church, Cobourg, St. Mary's Anglican Church in Hamilton, St. Paul's Anglican Church, Westdale, Christ's Church, Flamborough and St. Boniface German Roman Catholic Church in Hamilton. He has offered valuable service to the larger church through interim work and Sunday supply (including at St. John's, Ancaster) and has played extensively at special occasions and celebrations in the life of the church, especially in The Diocese of Niagara.
Beyond his music, Murray has also offered invaluable service to the church as a Lay Delegate to Synod in Toronto and Niagara, as a member of Diocesan Executive Committee in the Diocese of Toronto, as member and Chair of the Bishop's Diploma Course, and a 14 year member and Chair for 4 years of the Diocesan Insurance and Risk Management Committee.
In 2007, Murray was made a member of the Order of Niagara celebrating his contribution to the life of the Anglican Church and The Diocese of Niagara
Murray came to St. John's as interim organist in the year 2000. After ably carrying the parish's music program through to the arrival of William Murphy, Murray and Evelyn retired to the parish and became a part of the St. John's community.
The people of St. John's are proud to have Murray as a continuing part of the community, supply organist and gardener extraordinaire!
